The bill prohibits compensation discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status, veteran status, disability, or age, but reserves the right for employers to pay employees based on certain bona fide factors. It also prohibits employers or prospective employers from seeking the salary history of an applicant, or otherwise screening prospective employees based on their current or past compensation. It ensures equal pay for comparable work and requires that a claim alleging unequal pay be made within one year of the unlawful practice (which occurs each time compensation is paid pursuant to a discriminatory compensation decision).
