This law amended the Civil Service Law to establishes a policy of equal pay for public sector employees, providing that no employee with status within one or more protected class or classes shall be paid a wage at a rate less than the rate at which an employee without status within the same protected class or classes in the same establishment is paid for similar work or substantially similar work on the basis of protected class status. The law also provides a private right of action for public employees to ensure that they have a mechanism to enforce their right to equal pay.
