Washington law requires all employers to provide employees with one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Such accrued hours may cover absences due to an employee’s or their family member’s mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition. Paid sick leave may also be used for closures of an employee’s place of work or their child’s school due to a public health emergency. Employees may also use paid sick leave to seek care, services, assistance, or alternate arrangements if they or their family member has been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. This law defines “family member” as a spouse, domestic partner, biological or nonbiological child, parent (theirs or that of their spouse/domestic partner), sibling, grandchild, or grandparent.
