California law prohibits landlords from terminating or failing to renew a tenancy on the basis that the tenant or a member of their family has faced domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or abuse of an elder or a dependent adult. These acts must be documented in the form of a temporary restraining order, an emergency protective order, a protective order, a written report by a peace officer, or a qualified third party as specified by the law. The documents must not be more than 180 days old.
