This law allows victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or abuse of an elder or a dependent adult to terminate a tenancy without penalty given that they provide proper documentation.

California law provides for the termination of a lease without penalty if a tenant or their household member has been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or abuse of an elder or a dependent adult. The tenant must provide notice in writing and attach appropriate documentation including temporary restraining order, emergency protective order, or protective order, a written report by a peace officer, or a qualified third party as specified by the law.
