Expands housing protections for survivors of domestic violence by prohibiting a landlord from terminating a lease based on abuse or violence against a tenant, a tenant’s immediate family member, or a household member.

SB 1017 prohibits a landlord from terminating or failing to renew a lease based on an act of abuse or violence against a tenant, a tenant’s immediate family member, or a tenant’s household member and provides for civil damages in the event a landlord violates this law. ALso provides that a landlord’s violation of these provisions is an affirmative defense to a cause of action for unlawful detainer.
