2017 | Fair Pay, Leave, Paid Sick Leave

STATUS: Enacted

Provides for the accrual of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Maximum hours of accrued leave that can be used by the employee vary by employer size.

Arizona law provides for the accrual of one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, so long as the employer is neither the federal nor state government. Employees of employers with 15 or more employees can use up to 40 hours of leave per year, while employees whose employers who do not meet the 15-person threshold can use up to 24 hours of leave per year. Under these restrictions, paid sick leave covers employee absences to receive or provide care and services for their or their family member’s illness, injury, health condition, or cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Paid sick leave can also cover absences due to the closure of an employee’s or their family member’s place of work or the closure of their children’s school during public health emergencies, as well as their or their family member’s potential exposure to a communicable disease. The law defines “family member” expansively, covering domestic partners, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, children and parents not related by biological ties, and “any individual…whose close association with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship.
