In July 2024, the Michigan Supreme Court held that that the Michigan Legislature’s adopt-and-amend strategy (meant to avoid putting minimum wage and paid sick time initiatives on the ballot) was unconstitutional. Starting February 25, 2025, the law will revert to the initatives as originally adopted.
The Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act (“IWOWA”), as reverted, gradually raises the mimimum wage in Michigan to $12 per hour by February 21, 2028. The minimum tipped wage, currently calculated as a percentage of the minum wage, will be gradually raised by percentage until it matches the minimum wage as of February 21, 2029. Subsequent gradual, inflation-based increases to the mininum wage will be calculated annually by the state treasurer.
